Pradhan Mantri Schemes: Response on Google Trends

I solicited a list of schemes or programmes or laws that the current Central Government of India has initiated. Today being Nov 12, 2019 the Prime Minister of India is Narendra Modi and the ruling coalition is NDA (National Democratic Alliance); the main party is BJP (or Bharatiya Janata Party). It is widely believed that the previous Central Government was the same.

Truth - The Prime Minister was the same. NDA was the ruling coalition and BJP was the biggest party in the coalition from May 2014 - May 2019.

This post is about how people have responded to various schemes or Yojana and programmes initiated by the government. Most of the names of the schemes I found from FB solicitation. Some were found by Google while looking for trends.

This is the list of those Yojana (schemes), programmes or missions. I have divided those in 3 groups. The division is according to Google search volume. With each group look at the plot of how many Google searches were done all throughout India. These numbers are modified so that they can compared directly with each other.

Technical detail - At a time only 5 topics can be searched using Google Trends. Also, if high search volume item is compared with low search volume one, we lose resolution for the low search one. To avoid that problem, I kept Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana in two separate searches and searched other ones. Then used Jan Dhan's counts to normalise the whole time-series.

All these counts are from Jan 1, 2018 to Nov 1, 2019.

A. High Search Volume (Google Trends link) -
  1. Ayushman Bharat Yojana,
  2. Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana,
  3. Swachh Bharat Mission,
High Google search volume Govt Schemes
There is a big spike in the later half of Sept 2018. That is the day when Ayushman Bharat Yojana was kicked off. Precisely on Sept 23, 2018.

B. Medium Search Volume (Google Trends link)-
  1. Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana,
  2. Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana,
  3. Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana,
Medium Google search volume Govt Schemes
Note that there is a spike on Sept 23, 2018 in Jan Dhan Yojana search too. This particular scheme was launched on Aug 24, 2014, some 4 years before this spike. Is it because of Ayushman Bharat, more people looked into Jan Dhan as well?

C. Low Search Volume (Google Trends Link) -
  1. Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana,
  2. Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Saubhagya Yojana, and
  3. Pradhan Mantri Matritva Vandana

Low Google search volume Govt Schemes
Again the same phenomenon is noticed. Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (launched April 2015) and Sajaj Bijli Har Ghar Saubhagya Yojana (launched Sept 2017, completed Dec 2018) show peaks on the same day as Ayushman Yojana was launched.

Take Away -
1. There is no conclusion drawn from these trends.
2. These trends can be considered response by people who have access and know-how about internet and googling.
3. When one Yojana - Ayushman Bharat was launched many other schemes, may be related or not, showed extra search activity. Although I have not yet checked the numbers or cross-correlated these timelines to put any confidence in this.
4. For medium search schemes, for the time period of Nov 2018 till May 2019, there seems some sort of correlation in trends. I have no idea if it is real or just visual and if it is real, why is that.

May be, I should investigate that in the next post. Till then, if you know what that is, post comments here.

Comments

  1. A good start, looking forward to the next one. A suggestion, if I may... you might see some correlation by plotting other events of political significance such as state or national elections, an international event of relevance to the general Indian public which may throw some more light into making sense of these tends.
